Other companies are having the same problems as United. All used "delay/deny" as a strategy to "reduce costs". What worked before may have just delayed needed care. Now the bill has come due.
I am not an expert on healthcare systems or outcomes. But I have lived overseas in several countries. Brazil comes to mind with its universal healthcare system. I found myself in Rio de Janeiro with a serious respiratory infection (after diving into Rio´s polluted Guanabera Bay.) After 2 hours in the ER, I was dispatched with an antiobiotic and an ER invoice for $100. USD. I pushed the invoice back and told the receptionist "I did not park my car...." $100. USD was the total cost. I think I ran out of that hospital with the receipt thinking they would come after me.
